Background
Karunai
Illam is home for children established by Persatuan Saiva Siddhanta (SSM Reg. No
3206/82 Selangor), a Hindu outreach missionary movement. Children of all ages
are taken in and the homes are run according to the Hindu way of life.
The home is not encouraged to take in children who are not studying. Most come
from broken homes.
The criteria for selecting children for both the homes are:
- children who are referred by the Social and Welfare Department
- children who are orphaned or who come from single parent families
- children whose parents are in prison
- abused children
- children from poor families who cannot afford schooling
- children referred by other organisations, based on individual merit
Karunai Illam was established in 2001 following the donation of a single story
terrace house by Ms Manomoney, in Taman Ehsan in Kepong. A second house nearby
has recently been rented to accommodate the older girls. There are a total of 19
girls living in the two houses.
All homes have a full-time warden each and are managed by a management committee
comprising volunteers from the society.
